Robert Pollien is an American painter of the landscapes of coastal Maine. Working from direct observation in an extended engagement with place, Pollien distills the natural world into compositions that speak of atmosphere, structure and subtle nuance. His paintings are known for their quiet intensity — combining disciplined draftsmanship, restrained color, and a deep sensitivity to changing light.
Pollien received his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Over the past four decades, he has exhibited extensively throughout Maine and the Northeast, with multiple solo exhibitions at Dowling Walsh Gallery and recent exhibitions at Page Gallery and Artemis Gallery.
His work has also been included in museum exhibitions and international cultural programs, including the U.S. State Department’s Art in Embassies initiative.
He is a two‑time Artist‑in‑Residence at Acadia National Park and a recipient of grants from the Maine Arts Commission and the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation. Pollien’s paintings are represented in the collections of the Farnsworth Art Museum, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and numerous corporate and private collections.
He lives and works on Mount Desert Island, where the landscape continues to serve as both subject and collaborator in the ongoing exploration of perception, memory, and place.
Rob is represented by The Page Gallery in Camden, Maine and Artemis Gallery in Northeast Harbor, Maine
